2008-04-29 - CD Release Show / Party
Dearest Friends,
You are cordially invited to my CD release show. Hopefully, you've already received your invitation sent via snail mail! It is going to be a really, really SPECIAL show- I will be performing with a full band (usually I play solo) as well as a string quartet! It is also a PARTY :-) Free cocktails for the first hour and a half and yummy appetizers (tapas). Come, invite friends and make a night of it!! Also, I will ask to snap your photo for my Polaroid project!
Opening: The Cairo Gang
The Cairo Gang has been a lingering passion for Emmett Kelly, a stimulated singer/songwriter with an impressive list of musicians in his rolodex. Intimately lo-fi with a touch of the dramatic, acoustic lullabies for whimsical romantics and the unfavorably doomed, the perfect soft rock to soothe your rock 'n' roll hang-overs.
In Leerone's BAND:
Eva Gardner :: Bass Eva is an electric bassist from Los Angeles, California. She is a graduate of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she studied under trumpet player Bobby Rodriguez. She holds a degree in ethnomusicology from UCLA (Cum Laude). Her professional credits include teaching stints at Soundwall Music Camp, as well as being the original bassist for the The Mars Volta. Her work appears on their first EP Tremulant. During January 2005 Eva was touring bassist for Veruca Salt during a tour of Australia. She is also the bassist for Los Angeles-based band Lyra which is on hiatus. She completed touring Europe and South Africa with Pink in September 2007. Eva Gardner is also the daughter of The Creation bassist Kim Gardner, and cites her father as her primary influence.
Garrett Ray :: Drums
Garret Ray is the brilliant drummer of Foreign Born, known for their vintage harmonies, near-effortless knack for foot-stomps, jangly riffs, and psychedelic crooning. Garrett has found himself on the road at home and abroad with We Are Scientists, Giant Drag, Rogue Wave and the Cold War Kids. They've shared bills with The Futureheads, The Walkmen, and Grizzly Bear, whose guitarist Ed Droste called Foreign Born his "favorite new band" in a recent Pitchfork feature.
Bryan Neff :: Guitar +++
Part athlete, part brand strategist and a little part of each instrument in Leerone's arsenal, Bryan fills the atmosphere with his energetic approach to the accents of Leerone's sound. After his work as a singer/song writer for several touring, Radiohead-inspired, indie-rock groups, Bryan and Leerone began collaborating to create a head banging live performance. Inspired by music in all its forms, from jazz standards to retina induced electronica, Bryan remains engaged on stage with his revelry of musical chairs. Listen to some of his earlier experiments at his Myspace profile.
Anna Stafford :: Violin Los Angeles solo Artist, musician, composer, and producer, Anna Stafford's music adds a rich arena of new, uplifting string performance styles to the Los Angeles Entertainment Industry and abroad. Anna's string production includes five Vitamin Records String Quartet Tribute Albums to Thrice, Lacuna Coil, INXS, Deftones, and Morrissey, and solo albums including Christina Aguilera and DMC. Anna's arrangements and compositions include work with producer Joel Diamond, DMC, Zenvox, Strings Magazine, Vitamin Records, Storm Productions, Prism Trio, and Bel Air Presbyterian Church. Her television arrangements include the documentary "Alexander the Great," and film short "Well Sooted" (2006). Her TV credits include the Ellen Show, JC Penny Jam, and work with artists Mary J Blige, Liann Rimes, 3 Doors Down, and Andrea Bocelli. As a live show artist, she has appeared onstage with Thrice, 30 Seconds to Mars, Jack's Mannequin, MASS Ensemble, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. Recent performances with Kelly Clarkson led Anna to appearances on The Tonight Show, The Early Show, and Good Morning America. Anna is endorsed by Yamaha, Pirastro, and Schertler.
Jennifer Lynn :: Violin Jennifer Lynn, violinist, was born and raised in San Diego, CA. Considered a "late bloomer" at six years old, she began her studies learning the Suzuki method and fiddle tunes, eventually taking the more traditional approach with standard repertoire on both the violin and viola. Accepted into the University of Southern California, Jennifer earned both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Violin Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Lyndon J. Taylor. She then decided to pursue a Graduate Certificate in baroque violin performance studying with Elizabeth Blumenstock on full scholarship. She receives her diploma this May. Jennifer has won many competitions, including First Prize in the Musical Merit Competition of Greater San Diego, which sent her to the Aspen Music Festival and School on full scholarship. She also attended the Chautauqua Institution in Jamestown, NY on scholarship for three years, ultimately performing with the Music School Festival Orchestra as concertmaster. Most recently, Jennifer traveled to Toronto, Canada to study with Jeanne Lamon at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. She was the only student chosen to participate in their joint program with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique in France later that Fall with Lucy van Dael. Jennifer was one of the first students to study chamber music with renowned violinist Midori Goto when she was appointed to the USC faculty. She has participated in chamber music masterclasses with the Eroica Trio, Guarneri, Audobon, and Juilliard Quartets and has performed nationally in solo violin masterclasses with Almita Vamos, Sally O'Reilly, Jacques Israelievitch and Anne Akiko-Meyers. Apart from her classical career, Jennifer likes to shake things up with her electric violin! She toured Australia this past summer with the band "Metaphor" in twenty-one cities across the continent, appearing nationally on television on the KerriAnn Kennerly Show and making headlines in Sydney's major syndicated paper, the Daily Telegraph. This February, she performed with the Foo Fighters at the 2008 Grammy Awards as one of the Top 15 chosen through a contest sponsored by the popular video-sharing website YouTube.com. Jennifer is currently working on transcribing popular rock songs for a newly-forming band. You can visit her artist profile on Myspace at www.myspace.com/jenniferviolynn and see her Grammy audition video at www.youtube.com/jenniebenn.
Dimitri Kourka :: Viola
Dimiti Kourka has worked in Los Angeles and New York as a freelance violist for 20 years. After attending Juilliard
School, he came to L.A. and has played L.A. Opera, L. A. Philharmonic. Recording work includes Burt Bacharach among
many other film and T.V. dates. His current band project is playing viola with Slow Motion Reign.
John Krovoza :: Cello
John Krovoza has been busy in Los Angeles and abroad as an acoustic and electric cellist since 1990. He toured extensively with Yanni, took part in the reknowned "Tribute" video, filmed at the Taj Mahal in India and the Forbidden City in China, has also toured as principal cellist on both the Michael Crawford and Percy Faith Tour. A 2001 feature on the single Overcome by the band "Live" has brought him appearances on The Tonight Show, MTV Europe and Much Music. On any given week, John Krovoza is on a recording project somewhere in L.A. John has at least 100 album credits, and has also appeared as a cellist in as many TV shows, videos, and films.

2008-02-21 - The Asbury
•••8 Stories Above LA•••
Last night an array of like-minded people gathered in a cozy living room with hardwood floors, Christmas lights draped on the walls and musical instruments of all shapes and sizes. It was the first of many "Care to share?" events to come at the Asbury.
The Asbury is a building, yes but "8 Stories above LA" is the event that takes place at the Asbury, every 3rd Thursday... Featuring a quaint and cozy environment, wine, cheese, beer, chips, 3 performers, 3 songs each and a recording of the magic that transpires. It's free (with a friendly donation box).
Last night was the very first and I'm proud to say I was a part of it. So thank you to Dave Franklin for hosting, Paul S. of WonderGround and Darren T. of The Airborne Toxic Event for sharing!! And of course, gratitude to those who were present and listening!!!
As usual, I brought my Polaroid camera along. Unfortunately, the film or camera went awry and I didn't get to photograph everyone who was there. You will see that some of the images are... well, you'll see.

It felt like meeting with an old friend and picking up right where we left off. Really comforting, quaint, intimate and as a result, rather magical.
Despite the cold, the sentiment remains: I love NY. And more so, I love my friends.
Thank you for coming!!!
Oh, and absolutely worth mentioning-- Holus Bolus, who performed after me, a delicious, cohesive saxophone soiree.
And also in the audience, Dan Herman, the host of a very awesome freeform online radio program, Radio Crystal Blue, check it out.

Many awesome bodies in the audience including a most talented photographer named Walter Briski Jr. and another fellow music-maker who writes and sings gorgeous tunes, Angela Ortiz. Didn't get a chance to catch the band after me, Stop Six but the crowd seemed quite enthusiastic.

2007-09-29 - Leerone loves MPMF!
Saturday, September 29th
••• MidPoint Music Festival @ Below Zero in Cincinnati, Ohio •••
It's true, I love MidPoint. I love my friends in and around Cincinnati, so much I keep coming back. Thank you to my oldies and newbies for catching my set and spreading the word. It means the world to me. You rock and I have the pictures to prove it!! Please keep in touch :-x I also want to acknowledge and thank Bill and Sean for making MPMF happen and all of the incredible volunteers who form the MPMF staff, like for example Keith (our stage manager) and Gravy (our sound guy). You guys are awesome!
Much gratitude to Ezra for this fantastic write up in City Beat!!

→ "In the space of three albums, Leerone has shown not just stylistic diversity, but also that she can create cohesive works that evoke specific emotions. Her debut had sort of a grown-up Fiona Apple-meets-Karen Carpenter feel with soft vibrato and lilting melodies. The following EP was stripped to the essence, just a girl and her piano, yet the songwriting became more profound, culminating in "Mutha Land," a pensive ode to her place of birth. On this year's Imaginary Biographies, she experiments with instrumentation and song structure and the results are truly magnificent. The lyrics are personal, topical and always poetic. The music is increasingly non-linear, but still accessible even at its darkest moments. Taken as a whole, her catalog paints a picture of a natural talent who is more interested in creating and sharing her art than trend-chasing or niche-carving. Her last few visits to Cincy have been solo outings, which are always moving."
For Ezra's blog click here.
And to Dylan, this comment is so precious I had to post it!
Enjoy the Polaroids...
Gigantic love, L.

Tuesday, July 31st
••• Songwriters on tap @ O’Brien’s Pub •••
I was HONORED to share the stage with incredibly talented, amazing musicians last night. Organized by OlivoiL Records ("keeping independent music alive"), in particular Cynthia Catania and Annmarie Cullen of Saucy Monky, “Song writers on tap" is an ongoing series meant to showcase "the best writer's in town, and those traveling through Los Angeles" in a nashville style “writers in the round”, which means each artist performs one song at a time, taking turns but present on stage simultaneously. Showcases are every last Tuesday of the month at O'Brien's Pub in Venice, CA.
I sincerely admire Cynthia's efforts to build an indie music community in LA, something I often long for and think about doing, and am floored by her/OlivoiL's initiative and evoultion. It's really quite inspiring. Check out OlivoiL Records.
Back to last night--> Other performers included Naimee Coleman (gorgeous songs, gorgeous voice), Duvid Swirsky of Moshav (so good, fell inlove with the sound) and Gabriel Mann (who could easily be a stand-up comedian in addition to being an awesome songwriter).
As always, a tremendous thank you to those who came to O'Brien's as well as those who stayed to listen, get photographed and mingle. Enjoy the Polaroids...
All my loving, L.

2006-09-21 - MidPoint Music Festival
Thank you to my dear, dear friends who made it out to my show in Cincinnati : Me + you = the Band.
MidPoint Music Festival founders Sean Rhiney and Bill Donabedian made it a point to be present at every showcase, covering an array of bands and venues across the city, a level of commitment and dedication that I find quite impressive. After my performance at the Know Theatre, Bill asked me if my travel from Los Angeles to Cincinnati for this very occasion was worthwhile. I answered, “yes.” Days later after having had the chance to reflect, I’m confirming my answer.
The MPMF staff was comprised of incredibly passionate musicians and music lovers volunteering their time and kindness for the cause. Matt Mooney also known as Captain Ordo, my stage manager, was among my personal favorites for his contagiously calming demeanor and of course, for making sure that everything was flowing smoothly. Special thanks to Katie Trotta who played a kick ass set and was kind enough to let me use her keyboard.
According to Lauren Bishop’s blog from the Enquirer, I seemed “personable and down-to-earth and while my only accompaniment was a keyboard, the crowd was appreciative.”
My only regret is that I could not stay longer to indulge in the local talent. Thank you to Bill and Sean, the MPMF staff and participants, for bringing a fantastic event to fruition.
Check out live footage of “Mutha Land” shot by Matthew Baker (thank you).
CiN Weekly's "THURSDAY PICKS..."
Los Angeles singer-songwriter Leerone's ethereal voice will get your attention, but her fantastical lyrics will make you a fan. This weekend the one-woman band returns, keyboard in tow, for her second Cincinnati performance (she stopped by for April's Chicks RockFest). With a sound reminiscent of other poetic songwriters (Tori Amos, Fiona Apple).
Leerone is currently recording an album - this time with a full band - that will be released early next year. "I'm so excited - I can't wait," she says.

CHICKS ROCK FEST 2006
It was well worth flying out to Ohio for this one. Aside from the fact that Chicks RockFest was incredibly fun, the event was also extremely well organized, the staff were awesome and beyond helpful, and the performers were amazingly talented and passionate. And more so, sincere… genuinely loving music and quick to support and enjoy the sounds of other acts. Thank you so much to Jenny Schmidt, Jeff Conner, Donovan the stage manager, and everyone else who contributed to the success of the festival.
Among the performers at Chicks RockFest, and unfortunately I didn’t get to see/hear every band’s set (these are the names of those who I saw and thoroughly enjoyed but there are definitely MORE), were Hungry Lucy, Lindsay Caron, Hello Tokyo, Kairos, LOURDS (who rocked so hard, I felt like crying), Shirock, The Whitney Barricklow Band,Manifest Frequency, Stephanie’s Id,
and Pale Beneath the Blue.
Thank you to all of my Myspace friends who came out and to those of you who stayed, listened and allowed me to photograph you.

ACME Art Company - Columbus, OH
ACME is a cool space with so much potential. Side note: I love that Columbus has a smoking ban. All smoking in enclosed public places or places of employment within the city limits of Columbus, with a few exceptions, is not permitted. As a non-smoker, and no offense to my fellow smoking friends, I was in heaven.
Thank you to those of you who came to my show in Columbus! Special thanks to Lauren (and Tracey / Columbus Music Scene), who was quite lovely and took us to a cute bar after the show, where we ate a spinach artichoke dip that I am still salivating over. You rock.
